Federal, state, and/or local governments need to set clear standards on environmentally responsible e-cigarette waste disposal and hold the industry accountable for adhering to them. E-cigarette manufacturers introduced a new tobacco product that soared in popularity with little thought on how to responsibly dispose of the resulting tons of e-cigarette waste. The group then performed a statistical analysis to determine group differences in vascular function before and after vaping.
Electronic nicotine dispensing systems (ENDS), commonly known as electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes, have been popularly considered a less harmful alternative to conventional cigarette smoking since they first appeared on the market more than a decade ago. Both the electronic devices and the different e-liquids are easily available in shops or online stores. The long-term health effects of electronic cigarette medical issues cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are not fully understood, but the science indicates they are not a safe alternative to smoking. Most are noncombustible which includes a battery, a heating element, and a liquid compartment, usually containing addictive nicotine, that is added to the e-liquid or included in the device. The heating element aerosolizes the liquid for the inhalation of the liquid nicotine or other contents.
Dual use, which is common, is at least as dangerous and likely more dangerous than smoking conventional cigarettes or using e-cigarettes alone. Further, not all ENDS are the same and the risks to health may differ from one product to another, and from user to user. E-cigarettes are still fairly new, and more research is needed over a longer period of time to know what the long-term effects may be.
When I exhale, the vapor is gone within 10 seconds, along with the smell. Funny how just about 10 years ago people were still allowed to smoke actual cigarettes in some restaurants and I didn’t see anyone walking out on their meal due to the smell coming from the smoking section. I’m not saying it was a wonderful arrangement, but people dealt with it.

According to data from the ministry's tobacco cell, there were 44 violations so far this financial year, 263 in FY24, and 33 in FY23, indicating the presence of vapes in the black market. According to government data, in FY22, 48 violations were reported, with no cases in FY21. Emerging evidence suggests some of the highest successful quit rates are now seen among smokers who use an e-cigarette and also receive additional support from their local stop smoking services. The review, commissioned by PHE and led by Professor Ann McNeill (King’s College London) and Professor Peter Hajek (Queen Mary University of London), suggests that e-cigarettes may be contributing to falling smoking rates among adults and young people. Following the review PHE has published a paper on the implications of the evidence for policy and practice.
Beginning July 1, 2019, Illinois law prohibits the sale of tobacco products, including these products, to people younger than age 21. The smoke also caused damage to the lungs and bladders of mice, indicating that it may increase the risks of developing lung and bladder cancer. Since e-cigarettes arrived in the U.S. in 2007, they have been investigated by addiction researchers as possible cessation devices for adults trying to quit combustible, or regular, cigarettes.
That’s about twice as many people as those who used other methods to quit smoking. Of people who used other methods, 91% kicked nicotine products altogether. People usually think vaping isn’t as bad as cigarette smoking, but the mist you breathe in still has nicotine and other harmful chemicals in it. Vaping isn’t safe and can cause health problems, including life-threatening lung injuries.
As such, it is imperative that e-cigarette cessation programs focused on adolescents are developed, evaluated, and implemented," Halpern-Felsher wrote. "This may point to the changing norms around e-cigarette use and the fact that quitting vaping among young people is becoming more normative and accepted," she said. Most of the study participants, about 87%, reported that they had tried to quit in the previous year, and about 94% reported feeling somewhat or very addicted to vaping. E-cigarettes usage by adolescents has become an epidemic according to the American Lung Association–20% (5 million) of all youth use e-cigarettes, a 135% increase in just two years.
More research needs to be done to understand the long-term health effects of secondhand exposure to e-cigarette vapor. Secondhand exposure to e-cigarette vapor is said to be less toxic than secondhand exposure to cigarette smoke. However, secondhand vapor is still a form of air pollution that probably poses health risks. N.L.B. serves as a consultant to pharmaceutical companies that market or are developing smoking cessation medications, and has provided expert testimony in litigation against tobacco companies. N.A.R. consults with and has received a research grant from Achieve Life Sciences for development of a smoking cessation medication, and receives royalties from UpToDate (an online medical textbook) as author of sections on e-cigarettes.
This includes the biennial WHO Report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic, which tracks the status of the tobacco epidemic and interventions to combat it and other relevant resources. Because of the lack of long-term data and the fact that patients have died from EVALI, the prognosis for those affected remains uncertain. Researchers are working hard to learn as much as possible about the illness, its causes, and the odds for making a full recovery. "We recommend that patients see a pulmonologist within one to two weeks after being discharged to undergo testing of lung function and pulse oximetry [level of oxygen in the blood]," she says.
At that point, levels of formaldehyde exceeded limits set by the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA), though other compounds didn’t come close. About a quarter of middle and high school students surveyed in 2017 said they had been around someone vaping at least once in the past 30 days. In 2021, only about 11 percent of high school students and 3 percent of middle school students surveyed said they had tried e-cigarettes. Results from a clinical trial published by JAMA Internal Medicine found that young adults ages who used This is Quitting from Truth had nearly 40% higher odds of quitting compared to a control group.
According to the CDC, 15% of EVALI patients were less than 18 years old. In addition, e-cigarettes and e-cigarette vapor may contain the chemicals or substances listed below. E-cigarettes are known by many different names, and sometimes people find it hard to understand what is really known about these devices.
The Mountain state has fewer restrictions than Wyoming and allows the sale of e-cigarettes to people under 21. Researchers from online prescription marketplace Universal Drugstore, analyzed federal and state health data on air quality, youth obesity, sports participation, mental health, test scores, and youth e-cigarette use. Based on a 2023 survey, the team found Wyoming had the highest rate of youth vaping, with nearly one in three teens using e-cigarettes in the last year, despite the state's no-sale laws for residents under 21. Smoking cigarettes increases your risk for health conditions that can affect the whole body.
However, it has been reported that the heating process can lead to the generation of new decomposition compounds that may be hazardous [4, 5]. The levels of nicotine, which is the key addictive component of tobacco, can also vary between the commercially available e-liquids, and even nicotine-free options are available. For this particular reason, e-cigarettes are often viewed as a smoking cessation tool, given that those with nicotine can prevent smoking craving, yet this idea has not been fully demonstrated [2, 6, 7].
While FDA has made progress in reviewing marketing applications for flavored e-cigarettes, it has repeatedly missed deadlines to complete its review of major products and failed to clear the market of these illegal flavored products. E-cigarette sales tripled between 2012 and 2013 rising from $500 million to over $1.5 billion and are expected to soon exceed the sales of traditional cigarettes, motivating giant tobacco and other non-cigarette companies to market this product.
The availability of "vape wear," such as backpacks and hoodies, also allow the user to vape while concealing the product. The study showed that the e-liquids of certain cig-a-like brands contain high levels of nickel and chromium, which may come from the nichrome heating coils of the vaporizing device. Cig-a-likes may also contain low levels of cadmium, a toxic metal also found in cigarette smoke that can cause breathing problems and disease.11 More research is needed on the health consequences of repeated exposure to these chemicals.
To view or search for local policies, search Tobacco Use Prevention and Control’s Policy Database. This video is about e-cigarettes and the emerging threat faced by rising youth use rates from Tobacco Control Network (TCN), Luci Longoria, and Dr. Brian King, FDA's Center for Tobacco Products Director. In addition, young adults were significantly more likely to use both cigarettes and e-cigarettes than adults 45 and older. Among young adults, men were slightly more likely to use e-cigarettes than women, while those who are white were more likely to use e-cigarettes than young Black adults and significantly more likely than young Asian or Hispanic/Latino adults. Some are small and look like USB drives or pens, while others are much larger.
Due to its recent dynamic economic development and continued population growth, Africa presents the greatest risk in terms of future growth in tobacco use. The seven most important carcinogens in tobacco smoke are shown in the table, along with DNA alterations they cause. The United States has implemented textual but not graphical warnings. Each e-cigarette was inserted into a sealed chamber attached to a lab-built device that drew air through the e-cigarette for eight seconds at a time with a resting period of 15 or 30 second between each draw. Established in 2015, VAPORESSO’s goal has been to establish a smoke-free world while raising the quality of life for our users through innovation and experience.
One study detected vitamin E acetate in the lung fluid of 48 out of 51 EVALI patients sampled across 16 states. By contrast, lung fluid samples taken from healthy people did not contain the vitamin. EVALI is a serious medical condition in which a person’s lungs become damaged from substances contained in e-cigarettes and vaping products. The smoke-free and tobacco-free policies at schools, businesses, healthcare institutions, and other organizations should also cover e-cigarettes. This will help non-users avoid being exposed to potentially harmful e-cigarette aerosol.
Adjusted analyses revealed that the type of e-cigarette device used played no role in the rates of cigarette discontinuation. Data were taken from the nationally representative Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study (PATH), which assessed participants through audio-based, computer-assisted self-interviews in English or Spanish. Interviews were conducted in "waves" -- October 2014 to October 2015, October 2015 to October 2016, December 2016 to January 2018, and December 2018 to November 2019.

Bene-Alhasan also said e-cigarettes are not recommended as a tool to quit smoking, since many people may continue vaping long after they quit smoking.
However, a single e-cigarette can be harmful to the body’s blood vessels — even when the vapor is entirely nicotine-free — according to a new study by researchers in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Tobacco products contain nicotine, which is highly addictive and can harm brain development as teens grow. Rural youth are at higher risk for harm, because they tend to begin using tobacco products at a younger age and use tobacco products more frequently. Products like e-cigarettes, vapes, and e-hookahs typically contain nicotine, which is highly addictive and can harm brain development as teens grow.
The number of unique e-cigarette products more than quadrupled from 453 in June 2021 to 2,023 in June 2022. However, nicotine levels are not the same in all types of e-cigarettes, and sometimes product labels do not list the true nicotine content. Products marketed for therapeutic purposes (for example, marketed as a product to help people quit smoking) are regulated by FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER).
"This is the first study to demonstrate the effectiveness of any quit vaping program for adolescents. It’s also a program that has been used by more than 780,000 young people nationwide since Truth Initiative launched it in 2019," Dr. Amanda Graham, chief health officer at Truth Initiative and principal investigator of the study, said in an email. Her team tracked rates of both vaping and smoking among nearly 5,000 Columbus-area people diagnosed with lung cancer, and compared them to a group of almost 27,300 people without cancer. It found that there was not enough evidence to confirm its products did not harm public health. The FDA has banned the sale of flavored nicotine products in the US unless a company has received their expressed approval.

Children are much more prone to nicotine overdose because of their smaller body size. Nicotine poisoning in children comes mostly from eating cigarettes and consuming liquid nicotine — either from absorbing spilled nicotine through their skin or through the mucous membrane in their mouth or from swallowing liquid nicotine.
Researchers noted that they were unable to assess any association between e-cigarette nicotine formulation and cigarette cessation outcomes. Another potential limitation was that the study only included adult participants who reported smoking within the previous 30 days, limiting information about younger smokers and former smokers. In that same vein, 5.9 million people began vaping, bringing the total use of tobacco products among those 12 and older to 64.4 million.
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)-containing e-cigarette or vaping products was linked to most EVALI cases. Emergency department visits related to e-cigarette, or vaping, products have sharply declined in recent years, but the CDC continues to monitor reports. In 2022, e-cigarettes remained the most common tobacco product used by high school (16.5%) and middle school (4.5%) students in the last 30 days. And more than a quarter (27.6%) of current youth e-cigarette users say they use an e-cigarette product every day.
Some products claiming to be nicotine-free (ENNDS) have been found to contain nicotine. Your doctor will begin his or her diagnosis by asking you about your use of e-cigarettes within the past three months and whether you vaped a product containing nicotine, THC, or both. During the physical exam, your doctor will use a stethoscope to listen to your lungs, check your heartrate, and measure your blood oxygen saturation using a pulse oximeter. A chest X-ray or computed tomography (CT) scan is usually necessary for diagnosis and will show hazy looking spots (called opacities) in the lungs. Your doctor may also order bloodwork to rule out other possible causes of your illness.

The outbreak of EVALI cases emerged against a backdrop of an ongoing vaping epidemic among youth.
At present, reference products for e-cigarette testing are not available. E-liquids are an important part of any vaping system and their composition, together with the characteristics of the device, may have an impact on nicotine delivery21. They mainly constitute a mix of propylene glycol (PG), glycerol (vegetable glycerine or VG) and nicotine. E-liquids may include flavouring compounds and usually come in different nicotine strengths or concentrations. Meanwhile, the government has so far issued 14,795 challans under Section 6 of The Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003, which prohibits the sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products to and by persons below 18 years. Vaping, still at epidemic levels among youth with about one in five high school students using e-cigarettes in 2020, generates a significant amount of toxic and plastic waste. Many popular e-cigarettes, like JUUL, are pod-based with single-use plastic cartridges containing nicotine. Generating even more waste are disposable e-cigarettes like Puff Bar, which are designed entirely for one-time use and have skyrocketed in popularity with a 1,000% increase in use among high school students between 2019 and 2020. Nicotine exposure during adolescence can affect learning, memory, and attention. It can also increase risk for future addiction to nicotine and other drugs.
However, when they looked at other scenarios, such as bar settings where many people were vaping, the researchers found that the concentration of toxins in the air was generally much higher than in residential settings. The more people were vaping and the higher voltages were used, the worse the air quality. In some scenarios, levels of both formaldehyde and acrolein were above OEHHA safety standards for bar employees. This article explains the toxins found in vaping aerosol, the factors affecting secondhand vaping, and potential health effects. MARIE — The Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan has partnered with Truth Initiative to offer a first-of-its-kind free and anonymous text message quit vaping program through the This is Quitting for teens and young adults.
"If there was good evidence that people were using e-cigarettes just to quit smoking, there would be wide support," Benowitz says. "The problem is most of the e-cigarette use in the U.S. is dual use with cigarettes." People use e-cigs in places or situations where they can't smoke, like in a restaurant, but continue lighting up when they can, he explains. "My reading of the evidence is that it is quite convincing that e-cigarettes are helping some people quit smoking." Many young e-cigarette users reported throwing away, improperly recycling, or littering the devices. Only 15% of young e-cigarette users reported disposing of empty pods or disposable vapes by dropping them off or sending them for advance electronic cigarettes lake zurich il recycling.
A 2019 randomized control study also found that daily e-cigarette use leads to an almost doubled rate of smoking abstinence than other nicotine-replacement products after one year. You might be tempted to turn to electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes, vape pens, and other nondisposable and disposable vaping devices) as a way to ease the transition from traditional cigarettes to not smoking at all. But is smoking e-cigarettes (also called vaping) better for you than using tobacco products? Michael Blaha, M.D., M.P.H., director of clinical research at the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease, shares health information about vaping. Truth Initiative supports regulation that encourages the development of consistently safer nicotine delivery alternatives that allow smokers to quit tobacco altogether or switch completely to a much less harmful, well-regulated product.
"From a public health perspective, we have always been concerned about dual-use of both traditional and e-cig products," said study lead author Marisa Bittoni, an oncology researcher at Ohio State University in Columbus. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the European Union are grappling with these issues as they decide how to regulate the products. Unfettered access could leave people vulnerable to unknown health hazards, but there is also the chance that greater restrictions might hurt folks who are trying to forgo conventional—and more dangerous—tobacco products.
Dr. Amanda Graham, chief of innovations at Truth Initiative, said youth e-cigarette use remains a serious public health concern. Launched in January 2019, the This is Quitting program has amassed more than 750,000 enrolled to date and is designed for teens and young adults looking to quit e-cigarettes. Although advertising may make it look convenient and appealing, it’s important to know that these products deliver varying amounts of the addictive chemical nicotine, which can negatively impact your learning, attention span and proneness to addiction. Many teens are taking things a step further, adding cannabis, CBD oils and other dangerous additives to vaping devices. When patients show up to the emergency department in respiratory distress from vaping, it can be challenging for physicians to treat them due to the difficulty in correctly identifying what they inhaled, especially when they are intubated or unconscious. However a recent study found that young people who are using ESDs to quit smoking might be smoking more, not less. Of great concern are the wide range of e-cigarette candy-flavors that appeal to youth. Urgent measures are necessary to prevent uptake of e-cigarettes and counter nicotine addiction alongside a comprehensive approach to tobacco control, and in light of national circumstances. E-cigarettes have been allowed on the open market and aggressively marketed to young people. Thirty-four countries ban the sale of e-cigarettes, 88 countries have no minimum age at which e-cigarettes can be bought and 74 countries have no regulations in place for these harmful products. E-cigarettes are nicotine-based products, and no nicotine use is safe.

The best vape kit for beginners requires little to assemble and maintain - for example, a disposable device such as the Crystal Bar or Lost Mary or a pod device like the Riot Connex vape kit where the pods simply 'snap' on with magnets - it couldn't be easier! You can get closed pod mod systems, which use cartridges prefilled with e-liquid. This type of device is suitable for beginners as it eliminates the hassle of messy refills and fiddly coil changes.
However, 87% of people who reported using e‑cigarettes with nicotine had obtained them without prescriptions. "This relatively small study showed that e-cigarettes have the potential to decrease heart muscle blood supply, not just under the stress of exercise like traditional cigarettes but even at rest," he says. The authors of a 2019 review point out that e-liquid aerosols contain particulates, oxidizing agents, aldehydes, and nicotine. When inhaled, these aerosols most likely affect the heart and circulatory system. Of note, another study indicated that although RANTES/CCL5 and CCR1 mRNA were upregulated in flavour/nicotine-containing e-cigarette users, vaping flavour and nicotine-less e-cigarettes did not significantly dysregulate cytokine and inflammasome activation [43].
A 2016 study found that people who use or have used e-cigarettes are less likely to stop smoking altogether. Flavors vary widely, from "traditional" and menthol to watermelon and "lava flow." Some e-cigarettes taste like traditional cigarettes and even mimic the tastes of specific brands. When the user sucks on the mouthpiece, the heating element vaporizes the solution, which the person then "vapes," or inhales. The nicotine content of the liquid can range from "very high" to zero. Refills come in flavors such as cool cucumber, mango, and mint, which may seem natural and harmless, but a single JUUL refill contains as much nicotine as a pack of 20 cigarettes. To inform this work and evaluate the effectiveness of policy, the CDC Foundation is collecting and analyzing information about e-cigarette sales, teen e-cigarette use, and teens’ attitudes about the epidemic.
And Puerto Rico have passed comprehensive smoke-free indoor air laws that include e-cigarettes, as of March 31, 2023. The 2019 outbreak of EVALI cases emerged against a backdrop of an ongoing vaping epidemic among youth. The amount, quantity and toxicity of substances that e-cigarettes release depend on several factors, such as the type of device, how the device operates and is used, and the e-liquid used. Drop the Vape also directs users to the New York State Quitline for free and confidential quit-coaching via telephone, internet, and text, and free starter kits of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) for eligible New Yorkers. In absence of federal law, states are acting to remove flavored nicotine products from the shelves. All the e-cigarettes previously authorized by the FDA have been tobacco, which isn’t widely used by young people who vape.
The vapor produced by e-cigarettes usually contains nicotine, heavy metals, volatile organic compounds, carcinogens (cancer causing chemicals), and in some cases, flavoring linked to serious lung disease. These and other harmful substances present in e-cigarette vapor can negatively affect the respiratory health of users. The monitoring of other tobacco product sales in conjunction with the monitoring of e-cigarette sales is necessary to provide a comprehensive picture of the overall U.S. tobacco product market. These cigarette data briefs provide estimates of cigarette sales in the U.S. market overall and select U.S. states. In January 2020, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ordered the removal of flavored cartridge-based e-cigarettes from the market. They found that while several of the liquids were moderately toxic to the endothelial cells, the cinnamon- and menthol-flavored e-liquids significantly decreased the viability of the cells in culture even in the absence of nicotine. The tobacco cigarette used as a comparator was the Kentucky Reference Cigarette 1R6F (Centre for Tobacco Reference Products, University of Kentucky, USA), which has been designed to provide a standard test piece for scientific studies. It is an unflavoured US-blended king-sized product with a cellulose acetate filter, an aerosol nicotine level of 1.9 ± 0.1 mg cig–1, and a tar yield of 29 ± 2 mg cig−1 as measured by the ISO Intense smoking regime6,56.
The length of time spent vaping can be much longer than smoking a standard cigarette. While most cigarettes are smoked within two to five minutes, e-cigarettes can last up to 20 minutes, delivering more nicotine and damaging chemicals to the lungs. In addition, some vaping mixtures can contain 20 times the nicotine that a single cigarette contains. This study builds on the findings of an earlier randomized clinical trial of This is Quitting conducted among roughly 2,600 young adults ages 18 to 24.
E-cigarettes first entered the market in 2007 and have evolved many times since then, with older versions designed to resemble regular cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and pens. E-cigarettes next evolved into "pod mods" with e-liquid sold in disposable pods. In 2015, the emergence of the brand JUUL took pod mods to the next level with high tech design, high-nicotine delivery, and youth- appealing marketing that hooked a new generation to nicotine. Without regulations, it is the "Wild West" for e-cigarette companies, says Stanton Glantz, director of the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education at the University of California, San Francisco, and a self-described e-cigarette pessimist. He argues that given the paucity of health data, current indoor smoking bans should apply to e-cigs as well.
In the vaping liquids that contain nicotine, the level of nicotine can vary widely. Prior to July 2021 in Canada, vaping substance nicotine strengths ranged from 0 to over 60 mg/ml of nicotine. Since July 2021, the Nicotine Concentration in Vaping Products Regulations establish a maximum concentration of 20 mg/mL for vaping products manufactured in or imported into Canada. Market size is clearly affected by national laws governing the sale of e-cigarette products. In 2016, the Washington State Legislature passed a law (RCW 70.345) to regulate vapor products.
What may be the most important message of all is that e-cigarettes and vaping come with many health unknowns, Dr. O’Connor adds. "You see plumes of what looks like steam coming out of people’s mouths on the street when they are vaping, and I think they assume it’s mostly safe, mostly water. But these liquids used in vaping are filled with all kinds of stuff [like nicotine, marijuana, flavoring agents, chemicals], and we don’t always know what else is in there," he says. When potentially risky behaviors experience an uptick in popularity, health researchers are never far behind—gathering data.
Upon entering the blood, nicotine stimulates the adrenal glands to release the hormone epinephrine (adrenaline). Epinephrine stimulates the central nervous system and increases blood pressure, breathing, and heart rate. As with most addictive substances, nicotine activates the brain’s reward circuits and also increases levels of a chemical messenger in the brain called dopamine, which reinforces rewarding behaviors. Pleasure caused by nicotine’s interaction with the reward circuit motivates some people to use nicotine again and again, despite risks to their health and well-being. First PuffsThe current iteration of e-cigarettes was invented and popularized by Chinese pharmacist Hon Lik in 2003 and entered the U.S. market some seven years ago. A federal appeals court ruled in December 2010 that the agency lacked authority over e-cigs because they offer only the recreational benefits of a regular cigarette.
Other compounds that have been detected in aerosols include acetamide, a potential human carcinogen [5], and some aldehydes [69], although their levels were minimal. Interestingly, the existence of harmful concentrations of diethylene glycol, a known cytotoxic agent, in e-liquid aerosols is contentious with some studies detecting its presence [4, 68, 70,71,72], and others finding low subtoxic concentrations [73, 74]. In this regard, either it was detected at concentrations that did not exceed the authorised limit [73], or it was absent from the aerosols produced [4, 71, 72]. Only one study revealed its presence at high concentration in a very low number of samples [5]. Nevertheless, its presence above 1 mg/g is not allowed by the FDA [73]. Figure 1 lists the main compounds detected in aerosols derived from humectant heating and their potential damaging effects.
The results showed that people who used e-cigarettes at any point were 19% more likely to develop heart failure compared with people who had never used e-cigarettes. In calculating this difference, researchers accounted for a variety of demographic and socioeconomic factors, other heart disease risk factors and participants’ past and current use of other substances, including alcohol and tobacco products. The researchers also found no evidence that participants’ age, sex or smoking status modified the relationship between e-cigarettes and heart failure. While teen smoking has fallen by 80% over the past 20 years, a new generation is now at risk of becoming addicted to nicotine — and possibly at risk for other serious health problems — through e-cigarettes. More than 2.5 million U.S. middle and high school students are now using e-cigarettes, with nearly 85% of them using flavored products.
The use of e-cigarettes has increased exponentially in recent years, and vaping has become preferred to traditional cigarette smoking among today’s young people and those looking for alternative to traditional tobacco and nicotine products. As use and availability of these products increases, reports have cast more light on the health effects of e-cigarettes. Here, Kenneth Uy, a health coach at Henry Ford Health, clarifies some information about these products and how their use can impact your health.
Screen all patients, encourage them to quit, and refer patients to evidence-based services for help quitting. However, nicotine used in vaping liquids is often sourced and extracted from tobacco plants. More recently, products containing synthetic nicotine, which is created through chemical processes, have been made available in Canada.
The campaign works to counteract the "cost-free" mentality held by many adolescents regarding e-cigarette use, showing them how e-cigarettes, just like cigarettes, puts them at risk for addiction and other health consequences. Besides nicotine, e-cigarette aerosol can contain harmful and cancer-causing chemicals. Defective batteries have caused fires and explosions resulting in serious injuries. Nicotine salts refer to nicotine that has been dissolved in a liquid mixture that is chemically adjusted to be weakly acidic.
Vapor products have many names, including electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), JUULs or vape pens. All adults who smoke conventional cigarettes or other combustible (burned) tobacco products should be advised to quit smoking at the earliest opportunity, recognizing that quitting is hard and often takes repeated, dedicated efforts. Individuals can also seek cessation support by calling QUIT-NOW or ACS-2345.
The device heats a liquid into an aerosol (sometimes known as "vapour" and mistakenly called "water vapour"). Nicotine is a highly addictive substance found in tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, e-cigarettes, and pouches. Over 50% of middle school and high school students reported seeing e-cigarette advertising. Only 28% of young people in the U.S. believe e-cigarettes have the potential to cause a lot of harm. Up to 40% of teens who vape are unaware their e-cigarette cartridges contain nicotine. E-cigarettes can also be used to vape marijuana’s psychoactive ingredient, THC.
As one addiction expert has said, "The modern cigarette does to nicotine what crack does to cocaine." Pax Labs discovered that by adding benzoic acid to nicotine salts, which occur naturally in tobacco, they could mimic a cigarette’s rapid nicotine delivery. Both British American Tobacco Plc and Altria are prodding the FDA for heightened enforcement on "illicit" synthetic nicotine electronic cigarettes in the U.S. vaping market. The companies have estimated those synthetic products represent about half of the overall domestic e-cigarette market.
Njoy’s products accounted for less than 3% of U.S. e-cigarette sales in the past year, according to retail data from Nielsen. Vuse, owned by Reynolds American, and Juul control about 60% of the market, while hundreds of disposable brands account for the rest. The market share of disposable e-cigarette products increased from 52.0% to 57.8% between 2022 and 2023. Among disposable e-cigarette products, those with flavors other than tobacco accounted for 94.7% of the market in 2023. Research indicates that e-cigarettes may emit harmful substances, which means there could be health risks to the user and others through secondhand exposure. The Texas Tobacco Quitline offers free, confidential, and convenient cessation services to Texas residents ages 13 and older.
Children and adults can develop nicotine poisoning from swallowing, breathing, or absorbing e-liquid through their skin or eyes. E-cigarette use can also result in serious injury due to defective batteries that have caused fires and explosions. Vaping and smoking both involve inhaling nicotine and other substances into the lungs. While cigarettes burn tobacco that produces smoke, e-cigarettes heat liquid to make an aerosol that often contains nicotine, various chemicals, heavy metals (nickel, tin, and lead) and small particles that can be inhaled deeply into the lungs.
Many grants on this topic are funded through the Tobacco Regulatory Science Program, an NIH partnership with FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products to fund research to inform FDA’s tobacco regulatory activities. Interestingly, most of these reports linking COVID-19 harmful effects with smoking or vaping, are based on their capability of increasing the expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) in the lung. It is well known that ACE2 is the gate for SARS-CoV-2 entrance to the airways [106] and it is mainly expressed in type 2 alveolar epithelial cells and alveolar macrophages [107]. To date, most of the studies in this field indicate that current smokers have higher expression of ACE2 in the airways (reviewed by [108]) than healthy non-smokers [109, 110]. While tobacco products have been a long-standing public health issue, e-cigarette (aka e-cigs, vape pens, vapes) use has continued to gain popularity throughout the last decade. Poison centers began receiving calls about e-cigarettes and liquid nicotine products in 2010, which overlaps with the initial period where these products reached the U.S. market.
In this particular aspect, again the composition of the e-liquid varies significantly among different commercial brands [4, 35]. The most common and major components of e-liquids are PG or 1,2-propanediol, and glycerol or glycerine (propane-1,2,3-triol). Both types of compounds are used as humectants to prevent the e-liquid from drying out [2, 53] and are classified by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as "Generally Recognised as Safe" [54].
According to the manufacturer, a single JUUL pod contains as much nicotine as a pack of 20 regular cigarettes. Although JUUL is currently the top-selling e-cigarette in the U.S., other e-cigarettes are becoming available that look like USB flash drives. Because of their shape, school teachers, administrators, and parents may not notice students using these devices in school, including in classrooms and bathrooms. Adults who use tobacco and are trying to quit should use proven quit tools, like group or phone counseling, paired with medications or nicotine replacement therapy patches, gum or lozenges. The agency says the sweet flavored e-liquids pose a "serious, well-documented risk" of enticing more young people to pick up a nicotine habit. In 2020, nearly 20% of high school students and almost 5% of middle-school students used e-cigarettes, and almost all of those kids used flavored products, the agency said in court documents.
But with its plant-derived, additive-free formula and rigorous testing, this device from Tribe Tokes is one of the safest vape products for CBD lovers. Like the previous entries on our list, the BC5000 uses e-liquid that's free of diacetyl and vitamin E acetate. This is one of the safest vapes for quitting smoking while still enjoying the effects of nicotine.
Poisoning from nicotine and e-cigarette liquid can occur by drinking it, spilling it on the skin, and breathing too much vapor. Cases of accidental eye exposure have also been reported as refill bottles are similar to commercially available eye dropper bottles used for therapeutic eye drops. Prohibiting e-cigarette use inside or near buildings, vehicles and other enclosed spaces is the only way to eliminate exposure to secondhand e-cigarette aerosol and health risks that may come with it. Other electronic vapor products that use e-liquids include e-cigars, e-pipes, and hookah pens (e-hookah).
Some people believe that e-cigarettes can help them quit smoking tobacco. However, nicotine patches and many other FDA-approved quit aids are available now to help people quit smoking. E-cigarettes are not currently approved by the FDA as aids to help stop smoking.
Experts have long suspected it, but a new study confirms that folks who vape and smoke tobacco face higher risks for lung cancer than if they'd done either alone. Propylene glycol, for example, is usually eaten (in cupcakes, soft drinks and salad dressings) or slathered onto the body (in soaps, shampoos and antiperspirants)—not breathed into the lungs. Many things that can be safely eaten—such as flour—can damage the lungs when inhaled. "We have little information about what happens to propylene glycol in the air," the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry says on its Web site.
The study was supported by the National Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association, the Stanford Diabetes Research Center, the University of California Tobacco Related Disease Research Program and the FDA. We acknowledge the assistance of Belinda Zonnestein in sourcing and testing of the products. We further acknowledge My-Linh Tran and Joseph Sutton for their contribution to product development and provision of product details and to Sandra Costigan and Elaine Brown for the toxicological inputs. Death typically happens due to paralysis of the muscles that control your breathing, fluid buildup in your airways and heart and blood vessel failure (cardiovascular collapse).
In 2017, the campaign began prioritizing e-cigarette prevention messaging to combat increasing youth vaping rates. "The Real Cost" campaign also educates teens on the health consequences of smoking cigarettes. Given that there is no safe tobacco product, youth and adults who do not use tobacco products should not start using e-cigarettes. Vaping and smoking both involve inhaling nicotine and other substances into your lungs. E-cigarettes heat liquid to make an aerosol; cigarettes burn tobacco, which creates smoke.
It can often lead to debilitating symptoms and frequent hospitalizations as people age. Electronic nicotine products, which include e-cigarettes, vape pens, hookah pens, personal vaporizers and mods, e-cigars, e-pipes and e-hookahs, deliver nicotine in aerosol form without combustion. Since they were first introduced in the U.S. in the late 2000s, electronic nicotine products have often been portrayed as a safer alternative to smoking, but a growing body of research has led to increased concern about potential negative health effects. Some individuals who smoke choose to try e-cigarettes to help them stop smoking. Since smoking kills fully half of all long-time users, successfully stopping smoking leads to well-documented health benefits.
Enter e-cigarettes, which were new, high-tech, and came with no proven health risks. There were no long-term studies yet, but common sense dictated that if you wanted to quit inhaling tobacco through smoking, the least you could do was switch to e-cigarettes. She added that there is also an "absence of studies" on the effects and dosage of nicotine replacement therapy, or NRT, for adolescents as a way to help them quit vaping. Nicotine replacement therapy is the family of medications used to help adults quit using nicotine, including over-the-counter patches, gums or lozenges or prescription inhalers or nasal sprays. California has some of the strictest regulations in the US, including a ban on the sale of flavored tobacco products to residents of any age.
Some public health experts believe that e-cigarettes are an essential alternative to smoking tobacco that can help smokers quit. Others argue that e-cigarettes could be a route into nicotine addiction and point out that their long-term safety has not yet been proven. There are also those that believe that e-cigarettes may offer public health benefits but that e-cigarettes should be regulated, particularly when it comes to the marketing of such products.
He encourages people committed to quitting to try non-inhaled methods such as the nicotine replacement patch or another FDA-approved smoking cessation product, as well as counseling. E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that convert liquid into aerosol, which is inhaled into the user’s lungs. Typically, the liquid contains addictive nicotine, as well as flavors. More than 10 million adults in the United States use e-cigarettes, and vaping has become especially popular among teenagers.
If a child ingests or touches fluids with an allergen in it, they could have a reaction. This, however, is only a theoretical risk for now, as little research has been done on the topic. One study, for example, found that under most conditions, someone vaping at home all day didn’t change the air quality a terrible amount unless they vaped intensely at a high voltage.
If used during pregnancy, nicotine may also cause premature births and low birthweight babies. The use of e-cigarettes is often referred to as "vaping" because many people believe e-cigarettes create a vapor, which is then inhaled. But in fact, e-cigarettes produce an aerosol made up of tiny particles, which is different from a vapor. Some vape shops may have legal responsibilities as both manufacturers and retailers of tobacco products.
An assessment from the agency, issued in 2008, references only a couple of studies that cover inhalation exposures—all with laboratory animals rather than people. The minimum age to purchase e-cigarettes and other tobacco products has also been raised to 21. A bill was also introduced in 2022 to raise the minimum age to purchase tobacco products and vapes from 19 to 21, but it was vetoed by Governor Mike Dunleavy.
They usually contain nicotine, which is the addictive chemical in cigarettes. E-cigarettes do not contain tobacco, which is the harmful part of cigarettes that causes cancer. By comparison, traditional cigarette sales have fallen by 5.2% since July 2023, while smokeless and oral nicotine products — led foremost by Zyn products — are up 11.8% as a category. Amid the increasing popularity of e-cigarettes and vapes among young people, health experts from PGIMER have raised concerns. They pointed out that many young people mistakenly think that e-cigarettes are "cool" because of their flavours, sleek designs, and social appeal. Experts warn that this misconception greatly increases the chances of non-smoking youth using regular cigarettes.
The cells are also less able to form new vascular tubes and to migrate and participate in wound healing. With a 399.73% increase in retail e-cigarette sales (excluding internet sales and tobacco-specialty stores) from 2015 through 2020, the environmental consequences of e-cigarette waste are enormous. The fourth-generation vaporizers can also be customized and come with different types of heating coils — some intended for vaporizing solids, not liquids. In general, people using e‑cigarettes did not report doing so in order to quit smoking regular tobacco cigarettes. In 2022–2023, only 1 in 5 (21%) people who had ever used e‑cigarettes reported that they first used e‑cigarettes to help them quit smoking (Figure 5). The most common reason people gave for using e‑cigarettes was out of curiosity (58%).
During the Vietnam War, cigarettes were included with C-ration meals. In 1975, the U.S. government stopped putting cigarettes in military rations. During the second half of the 20th century, the adverse health effects of tobacco smoking started to become widely known and printed health warnings became common on cigarette packets. This health advisory is being issued by the State Health Officer to inform the public about the alarming statistics on current e-cigarette use among youth in Wisconsin. In Wisconsin, current e-cigarette use among Wisconsin high school students increased 154% between 2014 and 2018.
Many are already working on efforts to combat this crisis, and we now ask for redoubled efforts and increased coordination. Below are recommended actions that different groups can take to address this issue. Cross-tabulations and Pearson χ2-tests were conducted with IBM SPSS 27.0, and multilevel logistic regression analyses with MlwiN 3.05. The associations between the student- and school-level independent variables and S-SM, S-EC, and S-SN were tested with two-level logistic regression models, with students on level one and schools on level two. The estimation procedure in the random intercept models was second-order predictive quasi-likelihood (PQL2). Analyses were stratified by gender due to significant interactions between gender and educational aspirations for all three outcomes in the unadjusted analyses.
In this article, we discuss the risks of vaping versus smoking and consider the long-term effects and risks of both. In light of these results, policymakers might want to consider other approaches to protect public health where tobacco is concerned, the authors wrote in the study. Of the increase in cigarette sales, 71% were of non-menthol cigarettes, suggesting that restrictions on menthol cigarettes would not counteract this effect. The primary outcome of interest was volume sales of conventional cigarettes and e-cigarettes per capita, during each four-week period, both overall and by type of flavor. Cigarette volumes are measured in packs, while e-cigarettes are standardized to 0.7-milliliter units, given past industry claims that one 0.7-milliliter vape pod is equivalent to 20 conventional cigarettes, or one pack.
Besides nicotine, e-cigarettes and e-cigarette vapor typically contain propylene glycol and/or vegetable glycerin. These are substances used to produce stage or theatrical fog which have been found to increase lung and airway irritation after concentrated exposure. FDA’s award-winning public education campaign, "The Real Cost," continues to prevent youth from tobacco initiation and use.
They are sometimes called e-cigs, e-hookahs, mods, vape pens, vapes, and tank systems. Using an e-cigarette is often called "vaping" or "JUULing." 2Most e-cigarette users do not consider themselves to be smokers. E-cigarettes, vapes, vape or hookah pens, e-pipes, and other vaping products are battery-powered devices that allow users to inhale, or vape, aerosolized liquid (e-juice).
Prior to that, it was the Wild West, where a variety of companies started making and selling products with their own personal spin. Per the survey, 10.0% of students (2.80 million) reported current use of any tobacco product; 12.6% (1.97 million) high school students and 6.6% (800,000) middle school students reported current use of any tobacco product. Importantly, the researchers found strong evidence of the program's effectiveness among key subgroups defined by race, ethnicity, gender, higher levels of nicotine dependence, smoking and other substance use, mental health challenges, and household dysfunction. "For many years, healthcare providers, teachers, and parents have been asking how to help teens quit vaping," said Dr. Amanda Graham, Chief Health Officer at Truth Initiative and principal investigator of the study.
Guidance exists on best practices on this concept of accountability — known as end-producer responsibility — but isn’t enforced across the industry by any governing body. Substances from inhaled aerosol particles reaching the e-cigarette user’s lungs, blood, and brain. Minnesota’s middle school and high school students who have asthma who vaped or smoked in the past 30 days reported experiencing more frequent symptoms of asthma than students who did not have asthma who had not vaped or smoked.
